Prepare yourself for yoga teacher training with these 4 steps:
Here are four things you should be doing before you sign up for your 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training course:
First, and most importantly… PRACTICE! It may seem obvious, but you should have already established yourself as a consistent yoga student BEFORE you take on a teacher training. You should have practiced for a year or more, at least once a week, and know the names of some of the key poses. With thousands of free classes online, you have lots of options for home practice, even if you haven’t been to the studio. You can also use books & other resources to maintain a home yoga practice.
Which leads to me to the second way, to READ… reading blogs, books, and yoga magazines will deepen your general knowledge, and make you feel more prepared.
Here are a few of my recent favourites are:
Dianne Body Yoga (Blog and Book- Yoga for Everyone)
The Yamas & Niyamas by Debrah Adele (Book)
The Science of Yoga by Ann Swanson (Book)
(Remember you can use your local library to request almost any book out there! Try it… I love libraries)
Thirdly, to EXPLORE— there are movies, podcasts, websites, YouTube classes and philosophy discussions all at the tip of your fingers. It has never been easier to access free, quality information. These links can get you started, but there are SO MANY GOOD ONES:
Jason Crandell Yoga and the YOGALAND podcast
Kino MacGregor and the Ashtanga method of yoga
The Yoga Alliance YouTube channel
Let’s Talk Yoga Podcast (and blog) by Arundhati Baitmangalkar
Finally, and importantly, I suggest you WRITE- journal, take notes… put into words what you are interested in. Make a list of your daily sequences or log your practices… ask yourself why you want to go further in your yoga study. What poses do you love or hate… Putting things into words brings clarity.
Yoga Teacher Training at Soul Space is a commitment, and one worth taking on if you are ready…. so if you’d like to join me in the 2021 YTT at Soul Space (beginning this Autumn), start getting ready!
There’s plenty of time.
